Good Books to Read this Summer

Good Books to Read this Summer. Well, any summer really: Horror, crime and humor. I believe these to be the best genres for summers: the chills and excitement from horror and crime books mixed with hearty laughs from great humor books. Perfection achieved.

Review: Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson (@thebloggess)

Pardon my ignorance, but I have only recently been enlightened on the existence of this delightful author and blogger through Twitter. She is hilarious. Satire and humor at its best. I urge everyone to read her.

TRIGGER WARNING by Neil Gaiman

A new book by Neil Gaiman: his unique blend of fantasy, magic, humor and wisdom. Gaiman did not disappoint. This collection of short stories would keep fans glued to their seats long after the last page has been read. My sympathies if you find it difficult to re-adjust to the real world.

FUNNY GIRL by Nick Hornby

I had been warned that this was a laugh-out-loud book so I mustn’t read it during commute. What I had not been warned about was that every single character in this novel was likeable, even the ridiculously narcissistic “love interest” of our heroine. This is a well-deserving bestseller. Funny Girl is much, much more than funny.

THE PLEASURE OF MY COMPANY by Steve Martin

The very talented Steve Martin is so much more than only a comedian. I’ve recommended one of his plays before (read here) and today I heartily recommend this contemporary fiction piece, The Pleasure of My Company. I’m not aware of too many stories based on a man with OCD, this is one of them. It is an engrossing read. There is humor, but more than that. It’s subtle, and touching in a realistic way. Just as a side note: the paperback version is cheaper than the Kindle version.

YES PLEASE by Amy Poehler

I do not generally read memoirs, but this one was quite the exception. Yes Please by Amy Poehler was a fun and inspiring read. Her signature humor is all over the pages. Fans would not be disappointed.

DIARY OF A MAD DIVA by Joan Rivers

A controversial lady: Joan Rivers might have made a long list of enemies, but I admire the grit in her. A woman who was not afraid to speak her mind, and who had her own style in humor and her very own take on life, I respect that. This diary was wildly entertaining, whether you enjoy her unique blend of humor or not.

Picasso at the Lapin Agile and Other Plays by Steve Martin

The very talented Steve Martin is much, much more than only a comedian. I loved his novels, perhaps I’ll recommend them later, but I particularly liked his play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile. An intelligent, terrific read.
